About NurtureSTEM

Hi, I'm Sohan Mohanty, a student at Wilcox High School. I founded NurtureSTEM in 2024 on a simple idea: the people best positioned to make STEM approachable for kids are students who were in their shoes just a few years ago.

What started as me teaching free computer science and math classes has grown into a team of trained high-school volunteers offering weekly group classes and one-on-one tutoring across nine STEM subjects, from elementary math to physics and computer science. Along the way, we've reached over a hundred students and delivered hundreds of hours of free instruction.

Everything we do is free, online, and volunteer-run. Every tutor completes a training program covering lesson structure, age-appropriate communication, and student privacy before they teach their first session.

Built on our own open-source platform

We run NurtureSTEM on a management platform we built ourselves. It handles our student roster, tutor matching, hour tracking, and training, with privacy enforced at the database level. We've open-sourced it so other student-led organizations can use it too.
